Personally I've gotten to where I allow very very few things to notify me. On nail I use notifications for individual threads if need be but never the whole app.
That's just me. Ymmv

In Settings/Notifications/Mail app. Turn off the Badge App Icon setting.Personally, I don't have Notifications turned on for Mail or Outlook. I get way too many emails to be notified about them._____________________________
