The point I started with was the comparison of students in this country with the same age of students in other countries where we come out with lower scores.
The college Freshman were asked basic questions like the first few Presidents, location of some countries, recent wars etc...Seems to me you'd have to be pretty self-absorbed to be unable to answer most of them. True, there are middle age folks who have no idea about Eric Holder, Nancy Pelosi. However, they are up to date on the sisters with the huge backsides.
