The slippery feel means you are using too much soap. This is common for people who are not used to soft water. We had a softner for years and loved it.
It doesn't matter how you get the water soft. The slippery feel it not from the salt. If you use too much soap any soft water will feel slippery.
Whatever type softener you get, make sure it meters the water used. This way it will only regenerate when it needs to.
