I have a nice App called Battery Sense. It was free at the App store. I have it on mu iPad and iPhone. Has an indicator which tells you how many hours of battery you have depending on what you are using the device for,

What about topping it off? I recharge almost every day but the battery isn't completely discharged. It's around 50% or a little more. I usually plug it in overnight.pat h - oh

So, if you *completely* discharge your iPad's battery EVERY day, then recharge it, it should only have 80% of its original capacity left after 3 years.
