Indeed, social responsibility is the reason to scan your files on occasion, if you send and receive things from Windows users. I also use ClamXAV for that. It's free, simple and quick. Just remember to fire it up before sending things out.
I would never run anything like Norton or McAfee in the background all the time, however. That often causes more trouble than it solves.
