Can I, while driving, use my iPhone to access the wifi external drive sitting in my home that has all my music on it? I don't think so. The iPod Classic had all my music on it and I can take it anywhere. I don't need Internet to listen to my music.

Well, yes and no.
Why isn't an "iPod Classic" an "i-anything"?
And you can get an iPhone or iPad with 128 GB.
And a Wifi external drive with 1 TB.
