My Pebble Watch can give off a vibration alarm that I can turn off or
"snooze" without taking my hands out from under the covers!
It does have "self-contained" capabilities -- not requiring
phone-connection.
I have no idea what the Apple Watch will be able to do "by itself", since
the AW *isn't available yet* and AFAIC anything anyone says about it is mere
speculation.
A watch can also be a more discreet way to check the time than pulling out a
phone, or at least less obvious & disruptive.
And easier to do when the phone is buried in purse or pocket under a coat.

What could a watch do that a phone can't already do? Isn't it just a phone
peripheral?
