On the other hand, one has to question "why now?" After all, Apple vets
all the apps they allow in the iTunes store, so if this is such a big
issue for them, why did they allow the Kindle app through with that
button in place originally? Kindle didn't change anything after the
fact, sneaking something past Apple. Apple could have forced the Kindle
app to change before it even got released, but they didn't, so one has
to wonder why it's such a big deal to them now.
And why does Apple come off in some people's minds as "poor Apple" when
they let the Kindle app through in the first place? The contract was in
place back then, too, so obviously somebody at Apple thought the Kindle
app was fine as it is, purchase button and all, fulfilling the terms of
their contract.
There's far more here than any of us know about, so I'd say it's
probably 50-50 bad-guy/bad-guy Apple and Amazon, and "poor Apple" and
"poor Amazon" doesn't really enter into their pissing contest at all.
It's (as always) "poor end-users" and "rich lawyers."
