Can you buy and run iBooks from a Kindle or Nook directly or otherwise? Not that I know of. I haven't heard any Kindle owner complaining about that inconvenience.
The Kindle store is a direct competitor with iBooks as is Nook, etc. The only device I know of that can run all of the readers is an i device. (I have no experience with other tablets so I can't speculate about them.) I'm just glad Apple decided to let their competitors get their programs in the AppStore so we can use them all. If I have to take one more step to buy a book, no biggie.
It's not like Amazon or Google are poor little start-ups Apple is trying to squash. This move just seems like business as usual between the big boys.

inconvenience, David! I really don't understand why Apple would want to
annoy their own customers just because of what looks to me like "principle."
