[MacBook] Cleaning up my hard drive

I have a 17inch MacBook Pro that I bought last year in the July timeframe. The hard drive is 500G and I am now finding that I am rapidly filling up the hard drive. I have lots of photos and do lots of slideshows and some other video.

Does anyone know of an easy way to assess the type and size of files so that I can either get rid of them or move them to an external hard drive? I want to be able to search for my big, huge files (which are probably video or files associated with a slideshow), assess whether to dump or move, etc.

I would also like to get rid of temporary files and I am not sure how to do that.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cheers,
Mary Ellyn
