While I use one as part of my otter box it totally ruins the beautiful screen

Yes, they do but they are replaceable, at lower cost and take virtually no time to replace.

Screen protectors scratch much easier than the screen is my experience.

Within 8 feet of me as I sit, there are 2 iPads and 4 (at least) iPhones.
None have screen "guards".
None have screen scratches.
