any ideas how to take a pdf in german and translate into english.

Yes, but you probably won't like them.  :)

I tried google translate but either couldn't figure it out or it didn't work . Is there a way I can convert it to word and then try google translate?

Someone else might have a better solution, but if the PDF isn't protected from coping to the clipboard, you could copy the text from each page and then paste it into Google Translate.

If the PDF isn't protected, you could open it in Adobe Acrobat (not the reader) and get the text out of it that way.  Of course you'd have to have the full program to be able to do that.

EIther way, there are several translation services out there.  I've had good results from bablefish.yahoo.com and translate.google.com.

Google Translate uses statistics of word patterns based on human translations to predict the proper translation.  I integrated its use into a game called KBang to translate the in-game chat capability, as it drew players from all oner the world.  Generally, the translation worked well, with larger amounts of text retrieving a more accurate translation.

Keep in mind that the text in some PDF documents are actually stored as an image, and then you would need some sort of optical character recognition (OCR) to turn it into a document (or pasted text) that a service could read.
