About a month to five weeks ago, the kit could only be found on the Internet from folks who had cornered the market on supply earlier and at outrageous prices. Then all of a sudden the kits started showing up in quantity in the Apple Stores. I think there was a temporary supply glitch and as the kit is made in China I suspect it was due to a factory problem there. I have one and use it a lot - it does not work with everything, though, the kit does not 'see' jpegs on any of my USB flash memory units - mine are older Lexars.
