I have read some places about alternatives for the AirPort Time Capsule.
I somehow enjoy the combination of an access point and a back-up device. I might consider using an SSD (for speed, but how about the deterioration). I also could use my NAS.
However, the AirPort devices are currently in stock at the Apple store in the Netherlands (where I live). Apparently in the USA too: <http://www.apple.com/us/search/airport?src=serp>

I currently use an AirPort Time Capsule for my Macs, iCloud for my iOS devices, several other cloud services and microSD cards (even with iOS) for "hot" storage, and some pairs of external hard disks for "cold" storage.
