I have a lot of my movies ripped using handbreak and on a RAID. I can watch on my iPad Pro at night using VLC.

Handbrake is free for Mac or Windows. Easy to rip a DVD or convert mpeg or MKV to MP4 of m4v.  Handbrake is in English.
