Re: [iPad] Re: Apple TV question

Interesting. I dont know anything about the US cable system, vs SVOD. I'd like to know more. Not the detail, but how it all stacks up. I will outline how it is in NZ.

1. We have free to air TV. UHF if you are close enough, satellite if not. Its free. The 3 main stations have the usual range of news and series, etc. A few other niche type channels or general interest. Its free, its HD.

2. Our one cable provider is Sky, which is via satellite. Everyone loves to hate Sky as they have this misconception it has a monopoly. Sky Basic includes FTA, the Natgeo, History etc channels. CNN, Fox, BBC News, Kids channels, Living Channel Food channel etc etc.About $47 a month. To get Sport thats $26 more. To get Movies thats $26 more. HD is $10 more. Rent the recorder thats $20 more. The bugbear is many don't want Sky at $100 a month just to watch sport. It has all the key sports and many smaller sports. 4 sport channels, with 2 to 7 popups as needed. 2 x ESPN Its great for sport. When I had Sky with sport it was $100 per month.

3. Netflix at $13   Lots of stuff but its old. It has some exclusives they have rights for. They call it Netflix originals but it isnt its just that they bought exclusive rights for

4. Lightbox, $13 also SVOD, run my my telco, it has less than Netflix, and its TV series only, its new stuff, and some exclusives

5. Neon. $20 also SVOD, run by Sky, has some movies, some TV series, some exclusives.

There are a couple other minor SVOD.

The issue here is that everyone hates Sky, as Sky has all the sport, and to get the sport you need to have Sky Basic, etc.

In the US, is there anything about cable (such as sport here for Sky) that tries to hold people onto cable, or is cable just like the SVOD apps that you can get, in terms of content? Or is it a case that you cut the cord, and have to miss out on some content?

Me, I got Sky back. Got a deal at $50 a month instead of $100, Im a happy chappy. Also have NF and LB, and CuriosityStream. These 3 SVOD are on my ATV4, great.

How easy is it to cut the cord and access what you want to watch via apps?

Time, maybe, to re-think TV altogether.

There has to be a happy medium. After getting an Apple TV and finding I watched mainly the different TV apps, like AMC etc rather than cable, I figured I was paying too much and shut off cable.  As it stands now cord cutters don't have a lot of options. We'd like to be able g to choose the networks we want, download their apps and watch. Even if that charge a bit. $6 a month for the CBS app, $10 with no commercials. That's fine for me. I don't know why other networks can't do the same.

To be fair, you cut your cord. Did you check whats available after that? A cable provider may have rights to the show, so its there only. That's fair

I love thatI can notATV had lots of TV network apps. What's maddening is that I am a cord cutter and quite a few of the nenetworks won't let me watch without a cable provider.

I use my Apple TV not just for iTunes movies (rentals too) and TV shows but I have downed all the apps for providers I like. PBS, Netflix, Hulu, STARZ, NAT.Geo., many others.

Thanks for the info, friends!  Sounds like the Apple TV would work for us.

I just tried using AirPlay to stream a ballet excerpt from the Medici site to my Apple TV 4 from my iPad Pro2 and it worked perfectly. You can stream content that supports AirPlay. I can't recall anything I have tried to stream recently from my iOS or iMac that wouldn't play, but your mileage may vary.
