Hi, I have an iMac and i use Air Video Server HD and Air Video app on my 4th generation Apple TV. All sorts of video can be shared with Apple TV. No conversion needed.
Or you use VLC Player on Apple TV. VLC Player is free, but it is not so userfriendly as Air Video.
Or you use Handbrake to convert movies to m4v file which Apple TV or iPad can play. https://handbrake.fr
Handbrake is free for Mac or Windows. Easy to rip a DVD or convert mpeg or MKV to MP4 of m4v. Handbrake is in English.
