I tend to think the opposite David. Only SJ could have developed the smartphone into what it became. But his individual desires saw the capability and features get very much outstripped by Android. Then there was the issue with size of the screen. TC took what SJ created, and took it to the general populace. The feature gap to Android is pretty much non existent, the screens are what any of us choose, 4", 4.7.. 5.5.
The board told him to INNOVATE. AKA make more money, so he has kept adding features, and thats a good thing. Many saw that as making it too hard or too Android complex, but it isn't.
So, for me, I feel that have stuck to the little machines and operating systems. That iPad growth has slowed a lot, that iPhone growth is slowing, is to do with the industry, so they are still doing a good job

I have an emotional investment in Apple, going back to the early eighties. I'm biased.
They did nothing to alienate me until Tim Cook took over the stage. I confess to disliking both his persona and his business focus.
The bad vibes I'm feeling have nothing to do with money making, but with a shift of corporate attention away from computing and onto show business and, god help us, automobiles. If I had Apple stock or just wanted them to keep making more money, I guess I'd be happy. Instead, I'd like them to have stuck to little machines and operating systems. There, they were - and are - brilliant.
