It doesnt really say so, Alice, but it does say it ill replace the smart TV and be a hub, so I take it that it will play live, linear TV by way of streaming. And it will have the On Demand that is becoming so popular. The hard drive attached to the ATV will take care of recoding of the channel is linear, just as your PVR does today. In short it will do everything your smart TV and PVR does.
Te consensus in NZ is that smart TV's are a waste of time. The maps are not on all of them, and Samsung who is the most supported smart system, has SmartHub, but SmartHub on this TV isn't the same as that TV or that BR player. Some smart TVs lose the apps when they update as the manufacturer doesnt support that TV anymore. Very much like Android OS. Best to have a cheap, small media player, and this could make ATV the go to all in one, does everything, has everything TV hub.

Here is an article that talks about live streaming in the new Apple TV http://www.wired.com/2015/03/people-might-actually-buy-new-apple-tv/
Will those live streams be available as On-Deman programming also?
