Whats the size of a MBA compared to an iPad? Significant. Having said that, if they made a 12.2 iPad Pro, and it had iOS and OS X, yes, get a MBA

Its bigger and heavier than a tablet. If they made a netbook of sorts, a 9.7 tablet, yep thats a viable option

And a MacBook Air doesn't fit the bill? What if they made the keyboard detachable?
