I have too many GB of non-Apple content on my devices to be using free 
iCloud -- I'd go way over the allotment!
I prefer local b/u anyway.

I like local backup, but I routinely do iCloud backup, and occasionally local.

As already cited here, iCloud monthly costs are:
United States (USD)
 20 GB: $ 0.99
200 GB: $ 3.99
500 GB: $ 9.99
  1 TB: $19.99

99¢ per month isn't bad for 20 GB…

Totally, I use 4.1 GB at present, and that backs up 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, and just over 1 GB of other documents.

I pay for the 20 GB because I expect shortly to be moving photo backups there.
