Re: [iPad] text message problem

Very interesting.

When I take a telephone number of a contact, I do not ask him if he owns/ uses an iPhone.
In any case, some of my contact numbers were taken few years ago. They might have switched over to iPhone ( or vice versa ) .

my wife took the iphone to a sprint tech shop where they talked about a fix that contains a step i'd never seen or heard anyone write or speak about before...that step, shown underlined and in maroon below, is:
after deleting all non-iphone contacts whose phone numbers are NOT in 10-digit form, plus deleting all messages to/from those contacts and all phone calls to/from those contacts, do a hard reboot (home button+power button until apple logo appears) before re-establishing the contacts, this time each one with a 10-digit phone number....the tech did that with one such contact to show that it enables the phone to send text messages to non-iphones --- and it worked!...so, our task now is to go through all the contacts, make the necessary deletions, hard-power down and then add them again...i can only hope this will fix the problem for all the non-iphone contacts.

p.s. given that this fix works it is incredible that, so far at least, i've never read about it anywhere on any board --- and it's been an ongoing problem since at least 2008!

Can you give us a link to a message board, that may help us get more info.

As said, texts (SMS) are nothing to do with iMessage, they are part and parcel of every cellphone capability.  Can anyone text you?

To use text, these need to apply.

You have a text plan as part of your cellphone plan.

The APN setting  is set to use texts. If your carrier is not an Apple authorised carrier, you need to set the APN to use cellular data, SMS, MMS. Otherwise its automatically applied as a Carrier Update to your phone by Apple

You need to use the correct format of cell number. This appears to be the problem?

In Contacts, the cell number needs to be in one of the mobile number fields I think.

thanks, pabitra, for your input...i think everyone who's replied to the original message understands what imessaging and sms are...what i'm looking for is a fix for the problem, which is that my iphone fails to send text messages via sms...each time i try, i get an error message that states i have to put in a ten-digit phone number...but putting in the ten-digit phone number doesn't work...do you or anyone else here know a fix?
  tim
p.s. this is a problem that goes back at least to 2008, given its description in various message boards from that year...there is discussion about fixes but i haven't yet seen a definitive fix anywhere.

SMS is a phone function and inherently built in to all mobile phones, including iPhone.
It is not built in iPad.
Apple message is a Apple proprietary messaging protocol which is only if both sending and receiving devices are iOS devices.

thanks, pete, but we previously had an iphone5s where, when SMS was activated, the iphone worked for text messaging to non-iphones ... my understanding is that's what the SMS feature on an iphone is for --- instances where imessaging is not available...does anyone here know if my understanding of that is off kilter?

iMessage works between Apple devices which has limitations which is why I've never used it.  I use Google Voice for texting since some of my friends use Android devices.

thanks, terry, but when i put a person's phone number into the TO: text box it defaults to the person's name and, thus, to their phone number, which doesn't work for text messaging.

I can send a text message to anyone's phone IF they have a cell phone number. Their number goes into the TO: block. I cannot send to an email address. If the number is to a non apple phone the front is green. If it goes to an apple phone the font is blue. I can send a text message to an email address if it's to an apple person..

hi all,
we just got an iphone5s and installed the 8.1.1 os...we are able to text message others who have iphones but not those who have other brands of phones...error msg pops up to the effect that the number texted is invalid and must be a 10-digit number...but 10-digit numbers don't work with text, either...from cursory research on the 'net, i realize this is a rather old problem, going back at least to 2006, but i haven't found a clear answer for a fix...can anyone help?

p.s. our phone carrier is sprint, if that means anything
