Tap on the home button which returns you to your home screen, click on mail and continue reading your mail.
There is no back button

Or double tap on the home button, choose mail, and continue reading your mail.

Subject: [iPad] Escape from attachment

Y'all:
How does one "escape" out of an attachment? Example: I just got an email with a Word attachment. After reading the Word doc, how do I return to my mail or to the home page? I had to shut down the iPad and reboot. There seems to be no way that I know of to simply return to the mail list or to the home page.
