The 70s and 80s datsuns got 33-35mpg. I owned 2. Diesels VWs get 50+ mpg I thought.

My friend's 1967 (yes 67) VW Beetle was getting 33 MPG (average over all driving conditions.) It finally gave out in 1996. Volkswagen was doing something right.
