Do you have any external hard drives connected to your iMac? I once had a run of similar issues with my MacBook: it ran perfectly in the field, away from home. When I ran it at home, I got constant lockups requiring me to force quit apps. I finally tracked it down to the external USB drive I plugged in every time I brought the MacBook home: it was going bad.
