While you are probably right, that is nonsense.
If you have no tools to examine the computer, how could you know about infections?
Windows users tell me this often, even while describing perfect examples of infection symptoms.
The things malware do are almost always invisible, they are about mail activity, network activity, maybe file deletion or damage. There is never a reason to think you'd 'see' it, until you really know what to look for.
