Careful with the reasons you hear about;
Many techs insist Macs should have protective software so users do not spread Windows malware -- the 'its a world community' approach.
That is spurious reasoning, of course; if the Mac OS doesn't contribute to the problem, those users should not have to spend money.

Some companies have broad (and probably old) internal rules that all computers have protection, which IT people may also assume as mantra without criticism.
Another reason is that some packages include other useful tools.
