How do you get to the history screen? I see it pop up quickly then goes on to requested page?

You can get an app called XSysInfo to instantly "clear the decks".  (Doesn't require jailbreaking)  Just choose the Deep Clean setting, and it will end all background processes and clear memory.

There should probably be a way to do this built into the OS, but there isn't, yet.

Do note that just because an app is listed in the history tray doesn't mean that it is still active.  A lot of people think that the "multi-tasking bar" is a list of active apps, but it is really just a history of all apps you've run.  You cannot tell from this list which ones are still active.  XSysInfo can help with that too, as it shows active processes.

Apps that are well written only rarely use system resources when they are in background.  GPS apps being an exception, of course.  On the other hand, I do  think that sometimes my iPad gets bogged down, and "clearing the decks" seems to help.  There may be some apps that are buggy that cause this, not sure.  Anyway, this is especially true if I need to run a resource intensive game.  I get less crashing if I clear memory before starting.

Has anyone come up with a better way of stopping running aps than deleting them one at a time?
