Re: [iPad] AT&T or Verizon?

We don't really need the gps because it works so well in our Droids.

Still up in the air regarding whether or not to get 3G.

thanks for your input.

My friend doesn't have an iPad but uses to connect his PC to the internet, either free WiFi or his Verizon MiFi 2200 when he can't get wifi. The MiFi 2200 is a little black box about the size of a deck of cards but thinner. You can see it on the Verizon site. But I'm not suggesting that product for you.
The Verizon MiFi 2200 connects to the internet by cellphone towers just like a Verizon iPad would when using that feature. Don't want to get you too confused about everything, but was just trying to give an example of the data coverage of the Verizon network.  But again, the Best system is the one with coverage where you travel.

Our iPad is wifi only. We do some travel and the power does out at the house in the winter so we have pondered some sort of cellular connection to the internet. Because we have various PCs,  iPad and iPod Touch, we'd like something that everything could possible connect to when without wifi. That's why we have looked at the MiFi 2200 and talked to my friend for experiences. But we'd be best suited with a plan we could turn on for a month and then off. So far for us have not found the perfect solution. For a mobile phone we use a prepaid Tracfone as we don't use many minutes, so don't have the option like your Droid hotspot.

Others can give you their experience on a Hotspot, but my opinion with no experience  -using the Droid would work just fine for your needs. Don't know if you can turn the hotspot charges on and off. Cost would be a factor in my consideration on that option. Check the features and pricing for the Droid.

Honestly you may never need to use the cellular function on the iPad. Many get by with WiFi at home and at places like Starbucks when traveling.
Some folks will pay the extra $130 for the 3G model just to have the GPS function.
At home we get ATT and Verizon equally, on the road don't know. If you offered me a free iPad 2 with cellular don't know what I would pick, because of all the various $plans.

Thanks for the very informative feedback.
Are you saying that he just used wireless and not 3G?
We travel very little and to very few places.  At home we have a wireless network, so we don't need the 3G.
I'm wondering if the build-in wireless hot spot in the Droid 2 would work as well as the Verizon gizmo.

Have a friend with the Verizon hotspot, little black box thing. He just
completed 4 month travel from AZ to Fla, Tenn, Georgia, Utah, WA, OR.
Mostly interstate, but then parked the RV in often more remote parks and
had great Verizon service.
Have to pick the service for where you will be and use.
