I'd first suspect addons/extensions on either browser (AdBlock, Javascript blocker, etc.), then I'd double-check Internet plug-ins like Flash, Silverlight, or Java.
Have you tried Google's Chrome web browser? It runs webkit like Safari, but a fresh install might simplify things.
