No, I don't lose anything (files nor settings) when renewing. Subscription is a matter of unlocking features rather than data. However:
Having the subscription associated with an account expire may well prevent one from reviving that subscription using that account.
Explanation:
I have two Microsoft accounts, a primary and a secundary one. When Office 365 was new, I used the free trial subscription using my primary account, then eventually had it expire (because I then didn't want the subscription fee in addition to a number of one-off licenses under Windows). When Office 365 came to the Mac and to iOS, I was keen to subscribe after all (Home plan, not Personal). I then found myself unable (or rather the Microsoft person on the phone did) to associate my purchased license key with the primary account. As a result, my Office 365 Home subscription is associated with my secundary Microsoft account.
Some fiddling may be needed when associating individual devices with the renewal of the subscription, but I wouldn't call it a frustration.
I do feel uncertain regarding the cloud storage space associated with my subscription, though. When I joined, it would be 1 TB (or even unlimited?) per account, then some unfair users made Microsoft throttle all to a shade of that (with a bigger shade if one complained in time), and now I seem to have 1 TB again.
It doesn't matter too much to me, as I have several clouds, but I'm in the habit of storing manuals there.
