Re: [iPad] iPad pro 10.5 and Word

Wow. This is very useful and helpful information. Thank you so much! I am a novice and would have known nothing about this and possibly would have lost a file. Thank you for alll the help!

If you have any Office installed on a computer and are able to edit documents using it, then you could use that instance and the one on your iPad to edit the same data files.

There is an obvious catch: a document needs to be accessed to be opened (for editing, even for reading), so it must reside in a place that can be accessed from either device. That is the where things like "the cloud" come in. (iCloud and Google Drive seem not supported. Dropbox, Box and obviously OneDrive are among the clouds supported.) I won't mention probable workarounds.

Despite adding to the confusion:
- Transfering files to and from the cloud takes time (however short) and a data connection. Do try to verify that a file has been stored in the cloud after editing it, before you close the application, and definely before you power the device off. You could likely do so from the File menu or equivalent inside the application or using the application associated with the cloud service (like the Dropbox app in iOS after saving an Office file to Dropbox).
- Hiccups may occur. I have repeatedly found myself unable to save an updated spreadsheet to Dropbox under its own name. Keep calm, save the file under a name that (for example) adds the date to the original file name, and keep the original file as a previous version until you feel safe to discard it. (If using the date, I recommend a format like yyyymmdd for easily retrieving the latest version.
- You may well want to make yourself comfortable with the "cloud" concept before entrusting important files to it.

Finally, do note that an Office 365 Home subscription entitles one to use the latest versions of that software on multiple devices. Refer to <https://www.office.com/>.

I'm a little confused Chris so I hope you don't mind another question. I would like to send documents from my computer which has MS Office installed (no subscription) to the iPad which will have the subscription.  Would like to be able to work on the documents from both places. Would I be able to do that? Thanks again!

No, I don't lose anything (files nor settings) when renewing. Subscription is a matter of unlocking features rather than data. However:

Having the subscription associated with an account expire may well prevent one from reviving that subscription using that account.
Explanation:
I have two Microsoft accounts, a primary and a secundary one. When Office 365 was new, I used the free trial subscription using my primary account, then eventually had it expire (because I then didn't want the subscription fee in addition to a number of one-off licenses under Windows). When Office 365 came to the Mac and to iOS, I was keen to subscribe after all (Home plan, not Personal). I then found myself unable (or rather the Microsoft person on the phone did) to associate my purchased license key with the primary account. As a result, my Office 365 Home subscription is associated with my secundary Microsoft account.

Some fiddling may be needed when associating individual devices with the renewal of the subscription, but I wouldn't call it a frustration.

I do feel uncertain regarding the cloud storage space associated with my subscription, though. When I joined, it would be 1 TB (or even unlimited?) per account, then some unfair users made Microsoft throttle all to a shade of that (with a bigger shade if one complained in time), and now I seem to have 1 TB again.
It doesn't matter too much to me, as I have several clouds, but I'm in the habit of storing manuals there.

Thanks Chris. One last question if it is okay. You don't lose any files that you made from one subscription to another?

I have the annual subscription, but I don't expect the period to matter. (Nor do I auto-renew. I yearly shop for the cheapest offer, then buy that. Some sixty-odd euros, taxes included. Upon my activation of the key, Microsoft conveniently adds the year seamlessly following the end of my present subscription.)

Thanks Chris. Is the office subscription annual or monthly?

Me, I can create Documents in Word on my iPad Pro 10.5".

Notes, don't know if they matter:
1) I have an Office 365 subscription.
2) I'm running iOS 11.2 (public beta) on the device.

Can anyone tell me if you can create or edit Word documents in the iPad pro 10.5 size? I'm getting mixed answers on Google. Thanks!
