> I took my brand new ipad 2 on an airplane a couple weeks after I bought it - and it was set on the drop down table in front of me when the plane took a little dive due to turbulence. The ipad fell onto the floor of the plane and slid face down along those lights "that will help you find your way out" if something horrible happens. It scratched the screen really badly. After castigating myself for not putting a case or screen protector on it, I took it home and put a Zagg screen protector on it - and it has worked just fine ever since.
In 6+ years, and 5 iPads of various vintages between two people, we have had no scratches and no breakage. A potentially fragile multi-hundred-dollar purchase deserves to be protected, and ours never go "naked".
The Apple silicone case that is now on my iPad "Baby Pro" would probably have kept it from having slid off the tray table in the first place.
> If you have a little crack or scratches on the screen, I and many others suggest that you get a Zagg screen protector film put on it
On the other hand, I and many others recommend you do not.
I have used 2 "screen distorters" ever on my iDevices — one on my original iPhone 3G, which did not have "Gorilla Glass", and a Zagg protector on a later iPhone which I was so unhappy with that I removed it in a couple of weeks.
