Re: [iPad] TV streaming devices, by market share

You can add Acorn (lots of British shows) to your Amazon Prime for a very reasonable amount, maybe 4 or 5 dollars a month, cheaper than getting it separately.

I haven't heard of Acorn. I'm thinking of trying the Fire Stick on my family room 📺. It has Amazon on it and I have Amazon prime.

Well I ended up buying a Roku 4. My husband the Luddite is having way less trouble figuring it out than the ATV we have. Now I guess I have the best of both worlds, ATV when I need to put my iPad content on the screen and the Roku so he can play both netflix and acorn content.

Personally, I don't needed 4K content. What I get from ATV is fine for me. I've also seen the Roku 2 and up. I still like the ATV 4 UI better.

I never used Roku 1 but the Roku 2 and up UI is way better than new Apple TV UI. Plus with my 4k TV I need all the 4k content that Roku has and Apple TV does not. Apple TV is still missing a ton of Roku only content hopefully they will catch up and release a new Apple TV with 4k/5k/8k version, or at minimum a 4k version. Apple TV has much slower release cycle than Roku and much slower update cycle. The 4k Rokus get updates twice a month typically the Apple TV at least in past only a few times a year.

Older Apple TV had a better UI than new one for many reasons. It lacked the "store" something Roku had since the beginning. Older Apple TV was pretty crippled without a store.

Also almost every model of Roku the controller is a Wii style motion controller with many games supporting it.

I wouldn't mind the Roku so much if the UI were nicer. I have the Roku 1 and the look and feel, to me, is as if the whole unit and UI were rushed out to marketing. IMHO, Apple did a very good job with UI and unit look. I do not get the lag with the ATV I get with the Roku. It could be that it's because my Roku is a Roku 1 but that really shouldn't have a bearing in it. A great UI that looks like time was spent on it and ease of use is what I look for. I was able to.use the ATV from the moment I had it hooked up. I had no problem. Friends of mine the same and they aren't computer savvy.

I have many guests that visit of all ages (I am an extrovert) and we have parties twice a month a more, and some of the party goers want to show others some streaming movies, TV or music. And people spend night or a few days at my place pretty often. And yes when I cannot wait on hand and foot on all of them they figure out my coffee maker, the Roku, oven and many of my devices when I am too busy to walk them through it and they want to use them. You dismissing their frustration (and ignoring that the Roku does NOT frustrate the same people) as "why should I expect them to use my coffee maker" is just an attempt to dismiss a legitimate observation I made over past few years.

They easily use the Roku UI and Remote, The Apple TV they need help or just can't perform some operations they easily perform with the Roku. That is a legitimate sampling of a variety of people I know of all ages and technology experience levels,

Yes I do judge all my devices ease of use and UI by how well many different kind of peoples of all ages and experience can use them quickly, and how quickly I can use them after not using them for a few weeks. The Roku passes this test with flying colors, the Apple TV does not. I am asked to recommend purchases and my reputation, and their willingness to listen to future recommendations, depends on how correctly I match the user, their needs and the device.

Would you expect your guests to know how to use your coffee maker? It's for you, not for them.
