Since this topic came up I have been observing tattoos to confirm my suspicion that most folks leave their wrist free of tattoos and sure enough they do. If they are wearing a watch it seems more because they don't want to cover up the tattoo.

I agree. The watch works on all natural skin colors. The inks of tattoos block sensor light. It's unfortunate, but I don't imagine a workaround will be easy -- or even possible.
Any scientists or engineers in the group have insight into the situation?
