I feel that PKS comments were directed at Apples proprietry functions, not hardware. BT is restricted to certain accesses, and the connector, I assume he means Lightning being proprietary.

Wrong.
My Apple Airport Base Station wifi is successfully used by a standard Windows desktop every day, and occasionally by laptops running Windows and laptops running Linux.
