I've had them both and there are pros and cons.
For my first mini, after breaking it TWICE in one month, I bought the Otterbox and it was great, extremely usable, except for one thing: it was HEAVY. It took a lot of the fun out of having a mini, took me a while to get used to holding up something that heavy to read. But I got used to it. I did get into the habit of carrying it around without the heavy second lid, though. And it did survive some drops.
For the second mini (long story) I tried the Defender because it seems lighter. Not sure if it really is. I noticed a couple things right away. It's *smellier* than the Otterbox, and it did not snap together as neatly. The worst problem was that the screen protector reduced the sensitivity of the screen - a LOT. After some debate I took a knife and cut the protector out, so now I am using a Defender without any screen protection. I assume it is no longer waterproof but the improvement was worth it.
I don't use the camera on the iPad but it seems to me that the Defender is set up to get dirty after a while - it has a pinhole opening for the camera with a deeply recessed bit of clear plastic. I can't remember what the Otterbox looked like .
I'm still tempted by the Nuud, if money were no object. And for a non-mini I think any of these cases would be VERY heavy.
