Certain mapping applications that I use only on trips are set to update in the background, so that when I *need* that data, it's ready (e.g., traffic jams).

Also certain weather and news apps, which then alert me for certain things.

I am told that Twitter/Facebook addicts will let them update in the background.

Updating Apps in the background.

Does your screen get turned off by Autolock, or by closing your apart cover, or by pressing the On/Off button?
If Autolock, try setting it to a shorter time (powering the screen draws a lot of power).
