It sounds like your Finder have a corrupt plist file. Have you tried repairing your permissions via Disk Utility or Onyx?--ryan

consistent problem since day one. I have taken it to the Apple Genius
Bar without resolution. The initial beach ball used to happen at the
login screen and therefore nothing could happen until the system was
rebooted.
I have reinstalled the iOS and it is less frequent but ever present.
Now it beach balls while at the desktop and it hangs until a reboot.
I have to reboot the iMac at least once a month.
