I will try that and see how well it works. Seems to me knitting and crocheting is popular enough that someone would have written an app that could do something like that. So far no luck finding anything even close.

I don't know of such an app, but I've used the split screen function for similar projects.  My most recent was opening iBooks on one screen and Procreate on the other in an attempt to learn to draw.
