This past week I noticed a short crack, that could be seen only when light was at a certain angle. It starts at what looks like a tiny nick on the screen edge and then runs an inch or two. Is my iPad Air 2 doomed or can the screen be replaced?
It is doomed.
But not any time in the next few years because of this crack.
It certainly can be repaired.
On the other hand, a small crick like you describe, if it doesn't interfere with function, could be left untreated. See below for Apple's repair charges with and without Applecare+.

A web search reveals many sellers and videos to enable you to do it yourself (I wouldn't; some would). Apple's relevant page is:
<https://support.apple.com/ipad/repair/screen-damage>
and says:
Screen Damage
Accidents happen. Sometimes a screen can get cracked or shattered. We're here to help.
How long will it take?
After you send in your iPad for service, you'll receive a replacement or your repaired iPad in three to five business days. A replacement iPad will be new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability. If your iPad was engraved by Apple, it could take up to two weeks.
What does it cost?
Repair and replacement costs depend on your iPad model and your AppleCare product coverage. Accidental damage isn't covered under the Apple One Year Limited Warranty.
Have AppleCare+?
AppleCare+ covers two incidents of accidental damage, each with a $49 service fee. You can also use our Express Replacement Service to get a replacement even before sending us your iPad. You can check if you have AppleCare+ by entering your iPad serial number.
Out-of-warranty* cost:iPad mini, iPad mini 2: $199
iPad, iPad 2, iPad Air: $249
iPad 3rd generation, iPad 4th generation, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2: $299
iPad Pro 9.7-inch: $379
iPad Pro 12.9-inch: $599
Plus a $6.95 shipping fee. Fees are in USD and exclude local tax.

I got a hairline crack at the top right of my iPhone 6 Plus, which is still in its second year of Apple Care. I brought it in to the Apple Store, they told me they would fix it. As I hadn't made an appointment, they apologized profusely for 'only' being able to let me have it three hours later.
For a 6-month old iPad's screen, I think you should be able to expect the same.
The O.P. didn't mention age, but it is an iPad Air 2, so it is definitely under 2 years old. But Applecare+ makes a $250 difference in the cost.
In any case, make at LEAST a fresh local backup to iTunes before you send it off for repair, and best both local and iCloud backups.
