The iMac would have been nicer - prettier, quieter, and a lot smaller
Hard to compare as I assume there won't be an iMac of this spec
Nicer - Subjective.. In what way? The case, the finish?
Quieter - No Idea. Many fan systems are available, and you'd need to relate the fan noise to the heat reduction required
Prettier - Subjective. In what way? The case, the finish?
Smaller - Yes, you would not want to put this spec in a thinner and lighter case
Bottom line is that Apple and non Apple use the same architecture. You can buy as cheap, as expensive as pretty as you like with Non Apple. You get that choice with Non Apple but you dont get OSX with Non Apple.

It's not a hotrod, just a cheaper iMac, built by Microcenter.
The iMac would have been nicer - prettier, quieter, and a lot smaller - but one manages one's budget as one must, alas. For similar reasons, I have an Accord, and not a BMW 😎
David Smith wrote:I did, however, decide that my new desktop would have to be a custom-built PC, rather than the 27" 4K retina iMac I wanted, because the cost of a fully loaded iMac would have been a thousand dollars more. Sounds cheap, but it makes sense, in context.
Sure does. You didn't want a Porsche. Instead you built a hot rod.~KLMI don't know if the market has changed, but when the "5k" iMac came out, there was only one monitor easily available with the same resolution, and it cost the same as the iMac did. But came without any attached computer, keyboard, or mouse. So I am curious what CPU, what graphics processor, what monitor you used in your "hot rod"?Also RAM and storage choices?(The iMac has a 27-inch 5K display with IPS technology; 5120-by-2880 resolution with support for millions of colors).
