Except on release months the traffic isn't usually so high that a minute clicking delete will clear any inbox traffic you may get if you goto individual messages

Have you considered individual messages?
It's almost exactly the same amount of message data in kilobytes to download, and you will get messages in thread order (if you have your mailer do that).
