How do you turn off location services?

In iOS7 you simply double-tap the Home key and then you get mini-screen-shots of all the apps you've recently used, whether they're open or not. Slide one up off the top of the screen and it's gone from the "recently used" list and if it was still "open" it's now closed and therefore not potentially draining the battery. If a person repeats this for all the apps in the "recently used" list he/she can be reasonably sure that there aren't any apps running. However I'm not sure whether there may be unwanted background functions running. If you've turned off the ability to use your current location automatically and also turned off the ability to update apps automatically the battery life can be extended I've found.
