It developed an internal crack... i.e. the glass itself wasn't cracked but something just under it was. The machine was still covered by AppleCare, but they refused to fix it. Said it wasn't covered. I have no idea how the crack got there. The laptop had not been dropped or hit... there were no signs of damage other than that crack.
