As someone mentioned you can use either Google or MobileMe to accomplish this.
I personally use Googe/Gmail. So I'd guide you in that direction. Add an email account (create a free Gmail account if you don't have it). And then follow the directions on this page:

Once you have your iPhone sync'd do the same thing with your iPad and you'd have both your devices in tandem.
I use my 2 laptops, iPad and 2 Android devices all synchronized using my gmail. But that's a whole different story. :)
