Transferring files in iOS can be tricky. Email is the most simplest
way to transfer files; however, it is not the best way because you end
up with multiple copies. First of all, the iPad can read Doc files
without any additional app; however if you want to edit the Doc files
then you need a 3rd party app like Documents to Go, Quickoffice HD,
etc.
Since there is no separate filesystem for documents, the files either
exist within the originating app or within a transfer app.
3rd party app like Documents to Go, Quickoffice HD, etc apps have
transfer tools inside that let you share your documents, but the you
will mostly like want to have an app (and associated account) like
Dropbox, box.net which basically give you an online storage area where
you can store your documents and access them from the desktop, laptop,
smartphone and tablet devices. Think of it as an online flash, thumb
or hard drive that you reach from any device connected to the
Internet.
If you have or get a Gmail (Google) account, you can use Google Docs
to store files as well.
To date, Apple's document apps (Pages, Numbers ad Keynotes) have the
least amount of transfer options than the competitors.
In iOS 5 (coming in the Fall), Apple hopes to improve the transfer
method with the launch of its iCloud service. The 3rd party document
apps will most likely allow iCloud storing as well.
