As others have suggested, changing your SIM card in order to use 3G is easy to do if you have an AT&T 3G iPad. I'm not sure but I recall reading that a Verizon 3G iPad's 3G technology does not use a SIM card and therefore you couldn't change it. You'll have to check that, as I said, I'm not at all sure.

Also, by experience, I'd say that you will probably have to visit the Australian operator store because you probably won't be able to pay online for your Australian SIM card or data plan, as your non-Australian credit card won't be accepted. You might ask your daughter to research this.

In short: it's probably possible, it might be a bit of a hassle BUT IT WILL BE WORTH IT. I'm currently traveling in France with my iPad 2 and I'd be lost without it.
