Why would a Genius say to"buy a new one" when right on the Apple website are instructions to get into the iPad mini? Slung sounds like the Genius wasn't so genius.

My grandson input an incorrect code too many times in his brother's mini iPad and it locked. It says it's disabled. Any ideas? My Son took it to the Apple Store and they couldn't unlock it; they told him to buy another one! It's only a year and a half one. Any words of wisdom?
