In my case, I did know the old email address and password, but that did not help me, because when I tried to log in with those credentials, I got a message that the Apple ID (my old one) was no longer valid.
There was no way I could ignore the annoying pop up you mentioned in your original message...it was constant. I think the Genius Bar is your answer (or a phone call, which is how I got help).
Linda
The problem with trying to log in with the old email address is that I haven't a clue what my password was! It doesn't work with my current one of course. I did find, in an old notebook, a former password for that account but it must have expired because that did not work either. I may have to make an appointment with the Genius Bar at our nearest Apple Store, which is not too far. Many thanks to everyone who commented on this; I am grateful for all the responses.
